Marimo translates from Japanese as “ball seaweed.” Despite often being called moss balls in English, they’re actually a unique form of algae.
Commonly kept as decorative pets in small jars, Marimo also make an excellent addition to aquariums thanks to their unique appearance and minimal care requirements. With clean water and low to moderate lighting, Marimo can live for decades—some have even been known to live over 100 years, and wild specimens in Japan have been recorded at more than 200 years old.
One of the last natural habitats for Marimo is Lake Akan in Japan, where they can grow to over 30 cm across—a size that can take many decades to reach. In a typical home aquarium, they grow at about 0.5 cm per year, usually topping out around 13 cm.
In the wild, Marimo stay round thanks to gentle wave movements that roll them along the lakebed. To maintain their shape in an aquarium, simply give them a gentle roll in your hands every few weeks.
